Students with exceptional needs in their physical, intellectual,
communicative, social or emotional development require special education
assistance. It is the Board's belief that the most desirable placement for
a child requiring specialized programming is in the regular classroom. However,
more intensive services are available for children whose needs cannot be
met within a regular class setting.
A wide range of specialists are available as resources to support the
classroom teacher in the delivery of special education services to special
needs students: special education specialists, speech and language pathologists,
psychologists, school counselors, and occupational and physiotherapists,
to name a few.
Parents who have concerns that their child may require services in special
education are encouraged to make a referral concerning the child to the principal
of the school. Teachers, also, are encouraged to refer students whom they
feel may be in need of special education services. A school Based Team, including
classroom teachers(s), special education teacher, and principal, in consultation
with parents, will meet to consider your child's needs and make recommendations
regarding the appropriate placement and service for your child. This Team
is formally called the Identification Placement and review Committee (I.P.R.C.).
Parents are encourage to attend the I.P.R.C. meeting. If it is agreed that
a student is in need of special education services, the School Team
will review the child's placement at least every 12 months. (A Parent
Brochure is available at the school with more detailed information.)
